We have come to live in an age in which the wheel of speed has devoured people's time and lives; their patience for lengthy reading has waned, and their time for it has narrowed after most of it was lost to social media. The dominant approach among people today has become quick learning, short reading, and brief notes.
Summarizing and note-taking represent the best methods of study and learning, and most brilliant and gifted minds kept notes and summaries of every book they studied. Yet, sadly, these summaries never received enough care despite their value; most were lost once the study of that book or curriculum ended, except for the rare few whose authors gave them further attention and refinement and brought them to light.
We have also been afflicted with an age in which patience for seeking knowledge has diminished and care for heritage books has become rare; few among the young read or look into the books of earlier generations; so our scholarly heritage has nearly vanished, and people — except for a few — have turned away from careful reading and deep study.
This malady has spread and worsened until it reached even those whose occupation is learning and study; we found — regrettably — many who hold prominent academic titles, and graduate students who completed their studies without deeply and thoroughly reading the foundational sources in their fields, let alone others, settling for obtaining their degrees sometimes through copying, and sometimes through quick retrieval from the internet.
For this reason; It was incumbent upon scholars and those interested in heritage to develop themselves to keep pace with modern means of publishing, and this is a universal law that has recurred throughout human history; no one can turn the wheel backward or move it against its direction.
The problem and its solution:
- The overall picture of the cultural reality is painful: (the Arab child reads 7 minutes per year، while the American child reads 6 minutes daily, according to a report by UNESCO. The organization stated that the average person across the Arab world reads only a quarter of a page per year, while the Arab Thought Foundation reported that the average European reads about 200 hours per year, whereas the average Arab citizen reads no more than 6 minutes per year).
- The emergence of the need for a project that brings knowledge out of its depths and makes it accessible to the public and renews the call for youth to know human heritage and benefit from it, as well as creating a mechanism to empower the outputs of the educational process.
- The decline in the quality of scientific research, which serves as a motivation to help a large segment of researchers engage in serious reading and draw closer to libraries, by benefiting and empowering young researchers, graduate students, and research and educational centers.
Project goals:
Building on the above; The idea arose to undertake a massive global cultural project that serves the academic environment and brings knowledge and writings out of the cellars of libraries and the corridors of universities into the wide-open space; making it easy, simple, and in a modern language, so that youth may draw from it and develop a sweet taste that drives the interested reader back to those foundational sources. Several goals took shape, among them::
- The main goal is Making reading a skill and a way of life, by encouraging the local community to take up reading.
- Summarizing thousands of scholarly and cultural works into no more than fifteen pages in a contemporary language, suitable for all segments of society.
- Empowering scientific research through cooperation with specialists, and young researchers, in producing these summaries, each according to their specialty, and rewarding them for it.
- Achieving cultural and knowledge exchange across human heritage, By translating these summaries into several different languages.
- Facilitating scientific research by academically linking these summaries to academic research tools, Instead of a researcher going to the foundational books to search for a topic and not finding it, the summary will appear with the search results, making things easier — and achieving connection between academic and scientific institutions.
- Reviving Arabic publishing By introducing youth and the young to human thought.
- The project will contribute to the translation movement and to cultural exchange among nations and peoples, because acquainting the world's nations with the titles and summaries of the foundational books of Arab heritage is an opportunity for civilizational dialogue.
- Reaching the translation of (1000) books in a short time, and its translation, and to seek to spread Arab heritage thought as part of human heritage, on all levels.
